Sorare NBA Beginners Guide: In Depth Tutorial

Although quite detailed, it will help you get up to speed with the game right away. So sit back, grab a coffee and get ready to read this tutorial.
We will start off explaining what Sorare NBA is, and finish off with a FAQ to help you understand every aspect of the platform.
What is Sorare NBA & How does it work?
We’ve discussed what other platforms do, but now it’s time to explain how Sorare NBA works and how you can get started.
Sorare have been working hard to become a central provider for Fantasy Sports games & digital collectibles, and they’ve joined ranks with NBA to achieve their ambitions. From October 18th 2022 onwards, Sorare will be releasing Digital Collectibles, which can be used to enter Fantasy Basketball Tournaments.
Managers will compete in auctions to win their favourite players, and compete once they have their favourite players in fantasy tournaments.
In the fantasy tournaments, your players will earn points based on their performances on the court. This keeps things exciting, as you cheer on every single Point, block or steal.
Managers that win in the fantasy tournaments will win an extra free digital collectible, which could well be a Lebron James, Steph Curry or a Luka Doncic to add to your lineups.
To Summarise briefly:
- You can Collect officially licensed digital collectibles.
- You will use cards in your collection & enter fantasy tournaments to win bigger prizes.
- Your players Score points based on their real-life performance.
- Cards in your collection will build XP when played, making them stronger & higher scoring for future matchdays.
- You will compete for rewards with other fans around the world, with the highest scoring managers winning the best prizes.
- You can utilise the marketplace to place bids on new prospects, sell unused cards or negotiate a deal by trading with other managers on the platform.
Getting Started on Sorare NBA
If you haven’t started playing Sorare NBA yet, you’ll be able to follow our live walkthrough which goes through the complete process. From selecting your very first card, to entering your first tournament. I’ll also point you in the right direction here, where you can get yourself a free reward card.
The very start of your Sorare NBA journey will be your onboarding process. This is a cool feature made by Sorare, to help you understand the very basics. Plus you get some more free cards, so it’s a Win-Win.
The first thing that Sorare will do, is ask you to pick your favourite card from a choice of five. You need to think strategy straight from the start, as this will be the only common player that you have an open choice of. Instead of picking a great player with a few years left, I have chosen a good player with more longetivity. I’ve gone for Nikola Jokic, although I must admit I thought at first it was Luka Doncic. Rookie mistake!
More Free Cards
You’ll be given some more free cards once you’ve picked your favourite one, but you won’t be so fortunate to be able to choose this time. Instead, cross your fingers and reveal your players, card by card. You’ll be given 19 cards, so you’ll get a good variety of cards.
My best players were the first one that I chose, plus Jrue Holiday, Sabonis and Dort. I’m not well versed in Basketball’s best players, but I know Antetokounmpo and Stephen Curry are the Cristiano Ronaldo’s and Lionel Messi’s of the NBA landscape! So they are the cards to be looking out for, without doubt.
The next stages are where Sorare advise you of the various card types that can be collected. You will see that your first 20 cards are all the same colour, white. The white cards are Common Sorare cards, and these cannot be sold on to other managers.
Other card types include:
- 5,000 Limited Cards
- 1,000 Rare Cards
- 100 Super Rare Cards
- 1 Unqiue Card
The next screen will provide you with your first opportunity to enter a tournament. With your Common Cards, you’ll be able to enter two tournaments. These are Common Champion & Common Contender. The rewards look really tasty, so it’s important to get involved in those.
Sorare NBA Points Cap
Where Sorare NBA gets interesting, is with the Points Cap that they have deployed within this platform. Quite notably, the MLB and Football platform don’t have these caps yet, but there’s nothing stopping them being adding in future tournaments.
Each Tournament will have this points cap, which means that you can’t just enter your best players in each position. It adds some great strategy into the selection, and stops stacking from ruining the platform.
When you compose your team, you’ll see the points cap in the top left corner. This means that we can submit our players with a maximum points total of 120. I’ve managed to just squeeze in with 117 points below.
The important to thing to notice, is that your Most Valuable Player will not count towards the points total. Only your four other players will be counted. You’ll have to find some clever ways to work with your 30 average score and build a winning team.
What is the 10 Game Average on Sorare NBA?
Every player card has a 10 Game Average Score, which is simply the average they have scored over the last 10 games. This average is then used against the points cap.
There are specific rules for what counts towards their average, such as:
- The player must have played in the game, to get any points contribution towards his average.
- A DNP (Did Not Play) will not count towards the 10 game average
- If the player has played less than 10 games, it will take the previous seasons scores. For example, if he’s played 6 games, it takes 4 games from the previous season.
- Your players can score negative points, alongside this they could score a negative average.
- If a player has not played in a previous season or match, their average will start as zero.
- A player that has played, but not played 10 games, will receive an average of the amount of games they have played.
Sorare NBA Roster
The roster on Sorare NBA is your lineup. You can play Five players of your choice in your lineups. There is no positional restriction, but you cannot exceed the points cap mentioned above.
This will lead to many strategies being deployed on Sorare, and there will be some highly competitive tournaments!
Sorare NBA MVP
Champion Competitions on Sorare will feature an MVP. This is like using a wildcard, where your MVP does not count against the points cap.
Your MVP is automatically assigned to the player with the highest 10 game average. This is probably the player that most managers would choose anyway, so this doesn’t change things too much… unless you were planning an underdog wildcard!
What’s on the Cards?
Fortunately, Sorare is making itself clear that these are not typical NFTs, where cards have attributes that make themself ‘rarer’. Although Sorare cards do have scarcity levels, this is solely regarding competitions that they can enter. All of the cards are made up of the same information. The cards consist of:
- Player photo (There will be a dynamic Action Photo, but this is no different utility)
- Team logo
- Player name
- Player position
- Card season
- Serial Number
These cards will also pick up the MLB variants of #1 Serial and Jersey Match editions, which will no doubt be the most collectable.
Sorare NBA Points Scoring System: Explained
| Action | Points Scored Per Action |
|---|---|
| Point | 1 |
| Rebound | 1.2 |
| Assist | 1.5 |
| Block | 3 |
| Steal | 3 |
| Turnover | -2 |
| Made 3PT FG | 1 |
| Double Double | 1 |
| Triple Double | 1 |
Just like other Sorare sports, NBA uses an action-based scoring system. This means that the events that happen on the court, will equal fantasy points. If your team has multiple games in a given gameweek, only the highest score is counted and their lower scores are discarded.
There aren’t many negative actions, but the -2 turnover will be an interesting one to see. It’s time to get digging into the stats, to find out which players steal the most, and lose the ball the least!
Sorare NBA Game Week Deadlines
Sorare NBA spans over a 3-4 day period, using a bi-weekly tournament schedule. This runs Monday to Thursday, and Friday to Sunday.
Gameweeks will run sequentially, starting from GW1 which stands for Gameweek 1. You must have your lineups completed 10 minutes before the gameweek starts, or you may miss out on entering that gameweek.
NBA Tournaments on Sorare
Sorare NBA will begin with 7 core tournaments, available throughout Sorare’s debut season. For the first gameweek, we will see Common Contender and Common Champion.
Don’t worry if you see the ‘coming soon’ on the other tournaments. These lobbies haven’t opened up for GW1, to enable managers to have enough time to build their squads. This will open up for GW2. For now, we have 71,000 participants in the Common Champion tournament, and 100% of entries will win a prize.
After this gameweek, you will have access to:
- Limited Contender
- Limited Champion
- Rare Contender
- Rare Champion
- Super Rare Champion
- Unique Champion
You’ll notice that there’s a contender tournament, and a champion tournament for each scarcity level. Contenders have been introduced to help you continue building your gallery in the current scarcity level. The champion level offers less rewards, but when you win, you’ll win higher valued prizes.
Which Tournaments can I enter?
Common Contender and Common Champion require a full lineup of Common cards. You can’t sneak any limited, rare or other cards into this one.
Limited Tournament Rules: To play in Limited tournaments, you’ll need to have five Limited cards.
Rare Tournament Rules: To play in Rare tournaments, you’ll need to use at least three Rare cards, but you can use up to two Limited cards.
Super Rare Tournament Rules: To play in Super Rare tournaments, you’ll need to use at least three Super Rare cards, but you can use up to two Rare cards.
Unique Tournament Rules: To play in Unique tournaments, you’ll need to use at least two Unique cards, but you can use up to three Super Rare cards.
Sorare NBA Lineup Restrictions: Which positions can I play?
When you choose your tournament to join, you’ll be able to start building your team for that gameweek. All of your available cards will be on show, sorted by their scarcity and their 10 Game average score.
There are no positional restrictions on Sorare’s NBA game. However, You can only use each card once per Game Week, and you can only use each player once in the same lineup – even if you have two of their cards.
You’ll also need to make sure your lineup has at least two NBA teams represented in order to be valid.
Following the Live Gameweeks
You can follw all of your players in real-time. Although Sorare NBA doesn’t provide any live streams of the games, you can see when their scores update from the live lobby section.
You’ll be able to see how many games your players have left to play, or it will show final if they have completed all of their games. If they are on the court at that moment, the player will show ‘live’ and his scores will update regularly.
Claiming Sorare NBA Rewards
Claiming a reward on Sorare NBA is incredibly easy. When a gameweek has closed, Sorare takes a few hours to populate the final scores and start to deliver the rewards. Once they are ready to be claimed, you’ll see the below in your account area.
To open them, select the blue button that says Claim Rewards. Things start to get really fun here, as you’ll be sent to a cinematic reveal screen. Just like below, you’ll slowly be shown some teaser information for your reward player, before the full reveal is provided.
Once you have revealed your new card, he will be added to your gallery. Providing he’s limited or higher scarcity, you’ll be able to sell this on the market. Commons, like mine above, are not sellable but they can be used on the Free to Play Sorare Game.

Is Sorare Like TopShot?
I think Sorare have pulled off a massive win here, partnering with the National Basketball Association. Ultimately, I think this will come at a great cost to Topshot, in terms of their customers and fanbase. I know that I’m writing this as a Sorare fan, but I’ve also got a Topshot account and there’s just no competition. Especially when it comes to utility.
Topshot is really good when it comes to collecting your favourite moments, but there will come a day that you tire of viewing the same 3 pointer, and you want more. Utility, Experiences, memories and a vibrant community to match. You’ll want Sorare!
Sorare is quite similar to Topshot, but their similarities stop at digital collectibles. With Topshot, you’ll be looking at purchasing packs where you ‘chase’ the good hits. You don’t know who you’re going to get, but that’s part of the enjoyment. The thrill of the chase!
The core of Sorare is their Fantasy Tournaments, which allows users to win more digital collectibles. In addition to this, you buy the exact players that you want via the auctions, so there is no chase element until you start to open up your rewards. Instead of getting things confusing too soon, I’m going to be explaining everything about Sorare’s Basketball game addition below.
To summarise; I don’t believe Sorare is like Topshot, they’re individual projects based around the same sport.
